Animal Head Brooches from Gotland

This is a type of brooch typical of Gotland, used throughout the Viking Age. Nowadays we call them animal head brooches.The Swedish island of Gotland was a particularly wealthy trading centre between east and west and produced some exceptional metalwork I have copied these from an original find from the 11^th century, covered in the swirling dragon designs of the Urnes style. I chose to make this particular model because it is such an outstanding example of that beautiful flowing style.

Unlike the original find, I have cut mine through as openwork for a lighter effect.
