Animal Head Brooches from Gotland
-
Description
This is a type of brooch typical of Gotland, used throughout the Viking Age. Nowadays we call them animal head brooches. The Swedish island of Gotland was a particularly wealthy trading centre between east and west and produced some exceptional metalwork I have copied these from an original find from the 11th century, covered in the swirling dragon designs of the Urnes style. I chose to make this particular model because it is such an outstanding example of that beautiful flowing style.
Unlike the original find, I have cut mine through as openwork for a lighter effect.
Price is for the pair.
Length 60mm
Weight of Sterling Silver Pair 113g (Weight may vary from piece to piece)

RRoniI bought a pair of these in bronze at the 2016 Battle of Hasting re-enactment in the UK and just love them! The finish and workmanship is beautiful, and they are my favourite go-to pieces of jewellery for events. They are incredibly nice just to touch and hold, no rough edges, and a decent weight. After 4 years of use they have held up well, and people often comment how much they like them.
Thanks Roni
